Pinning Ceremony *

During the mid-nineteenth century nursing was not considered a suitable profession for a well-documented woman. Nurses of the time were lacking in training and they also had the reputation of being coarse, ignorant women. Efforts were being made to train nurses, although programs were few and inadequate. Someone was needed to provide leadership for nursing education and service; and Florence Nightingale responded by providing direction for nursing. Nightingale had achieved the transformation of nursing from its disreputable past into a responsible and respectable career for women.

True to its principle that education is its service offering to God and country, Misamis University opened its College of Nursing in the year 1975.

In an effort to signify the nursing profession in Misamis University, the nursing pin was created during the headship of Dean Purificacion V. Padilla.

The Pin is in the form of a Cross that symbolizes the nurse's commitment and dedication to their chosen profession. It also represents the many sacrifices that the nurse is willing to undertake for the sake of his/her profession.

Embedded at the center is a Lamp which serves as a beacon of light and hope for each nursing graduate who pass through the hallowed portals of Misamis University. It serves as a symbol for the continuing quest for academic excellence that distinguishes an MU graduate.

Below the Lamp are the numbers 1929, the year when Dr. Hilarion T. Feliciano realized his vision of providing quality education to the young people of northern mindanao through the founding of Misamis Institute, presently known as Misamis University.

After 77 years of continuous commitment to the ideals and mission of its founders, Misamis University still blazes through and makes ineffaceable footprints in the challenging world of the 21st century.

Nurses wear the pin after acquiring the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing as a testimony of her worthiness to her profession.

This is the essence of the nursing pin.
